How Can I Be There for People I Have to Let Go

How Can I Be There for People I Have to Let Go I had a client a while ago who was made redundant, at the time he was provided with outplacement support by his company but chose to also see me independently alongside this. When his next company was making redundancies a few years later, he chose to approach me again to assist these people. Our work together which included more bespoke effective and practical straight to the point assistance led to him wanting these people to have a similar experience. Letting people go is never easy. Being made redundant is often a challenging time but if the correct advice, support, and assistance is provided and a process is worked through by those that are leaving it could be viewed as an opportunity. Here are some additional (and mostly free) ways you could provide additional help to exiting employees. 1. Don’t Rush Can you offer some extra time? Time to reflect, analyze and think through what they are suited to and what they would like to be doing next. It is essential for people to take their time rather than rush into the next thing without thought and reflection. It is ideal if someone can go from one job whilst still employed in another can you offer this? 2. Try and keep positive Redundancy is a widespread occurrence in our changing economy. Reiterating this and asking them to depersonalize it, stay positive and to look after themselves is crucial. Can you offer a plan for them and some assistance and coaching? Possibly resilience coaching? This could be relevant for those leaving but also for those left behind. 3. Put the Work in Finding another job, ensuring all your marketing material (CV/LinkedIn) is impressive plus doing the investigative work on YOU can take time. The more effort and work they put into this the more focussed and ultimately more successful their career transition will be. Can you allow time for this and provide some feedback for example on their CV or LinkedIn profile or time to talk things through? 4. Network It has been documented that a high percentage of people get their next job through their network, can you assist with any introductions? Introductions to agencies, clients, competitors? 5. Build Their Experience Are you able to offer any freelance work or project work in different departments whilst they are looking? If possible adding to the experience they have in their next chosen field whilst limiting CV gaps. 6. Help them to present well on Social Media Can you connect with them on social media and provide them with a broader network? Can you assist them with endorsements or recommendations on LinkedIn for example? Are you able to provide a reference or act as their referee contact? 7. Help them look for clues Are there any insights that you have had with regards to their work and what you have observed them being very good at? Can you take out old appraisals and provide some feedback that they can use moving forward. 8. Be their mentor Can you or someone within the company offer some mentoring sessions that they have access to should they need it? 9. Be Clear Clearly communicate what they can expect, what support you will be providing and where you are going above and beyond to assist them.  Being as clear and transparent as you can with all employees. The above provides ways that you can help and if you want to extend this and offer them the best chance whilst avoiding expensive outplacement cost why not look online at our new offering Transition Peak. Goal Setting 6 Strategies for Success This Year - Classy Career Girl

Goal Setting 6 Strategies for Success This Year As the third week of 2017 quickly passes us, I find myself trying to set some ambitious goals for the year ahead. I am sure some of you are doing the same. But simply writing down goals is not enough. It is equally important to be strategic with them so you can set yourself up for success. I always suggest keeping a birds-eye level view of your goals in plain sight, so you can keep your eyes on them all year long. Do the nitty gritty planning somewhere else, but keep a snapshot of it in plain view! As for the actual process, I have learned a few things that work startlingly well (and some that don’t). Here are my top tips for setting goals so you are positioning yourself for maximum success throughout the year. Goal Setting: 6 Strategies for Success  This Year 1. Categorize Divvy up your life in a few categories that make sense to you. These categories should be the areas of your life you want to work on the next year. For me, it is Business, Health, and Personal Development, because these are the areas I want to make big strides in in 2017. Once you create these categories, write down 4-5 goals in each category. 2. Consolidate to Focus See those 4-5 goals you identified in each category? Now strike them out until only one or two remain in each area. Make sure that only the most meaningful or the ones you are most drawn to remain on your list. What you are doing is consolidating so you can focus  all your attention on those 1 or 2 goals. If you have five goals for example, your focus will be spread thin among the five goals. But if you have 1 or 2 goals, you focus will remain concentrated. This is what top performers do. They focus  on one goal until they get to the desired outcome. And then  they move on to the next. [RELATED: Plan For the New Year the Right Way] 3. Dates, Dates, Dates! This might be the project manager in me screaming to make her voice heard, but DATES are key! When do you want to reach goal A by? When do you want to reach goal B by? 4. Break Them Down Now that you have your goals boiled down to just a few, take each item and break them down into manageable chunks. Try to break them down into as much detail as possible. Use a journal/agenda and really get down to the nitty-gritty tasks and subtasks that need to be completed. This will give you a more realistic view of what is required to actually achieve what you set out to do. My absolute favourite journals are the beautiful Shining Year journals. 5. Be Realistic and Authentic! Type A personalities like to load their plate up with as many things as possible, because they can do it all! My advice and strong recommendation, do not do that! You will be setting yourself up for failure, burnout or low self-esteem when you don’t meet your unrealistic expectations. That is so not what you need. Be authentic in your goal-setting. Your goals should light you up, not burn you out! I have used the Desire Map process for years, to make sure that I set authentic goals that make me squeal with excitement. 6. Keep Plans Fluid Excellent! You have a plan of attack for 2017! However, did you leave some room for say, a brilliant opportunity that came your way? Or perhaps a total 180-degree change in your goals because a key part of your goals just did not pan out like you had envisioned it? Remember to keep your plans slightly fluid so you can adapt and take advantage of some unexpected magic. So there you have it! A solid strategy to plan out your 2017 like the pro that you are. Goal-setting strategically helps you stay on the intended path, rather than letting life toss you around. Who wants that, right? Now tell me, what are your favorite strategies for setting meaningful, successful goals?

Buying vs. Leasing Your Tech Everything You Need to Know - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Buying vs. Leasing Your Tech Everything You Need to Know - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Staying up to date with the new forms of technology can be expensive and overwhelming. If you’re a small-business owner or entrepreneur, it may not be in your budget to purchase new tech every couple of years. This can leave you wondering if it makes more sense for you to buy or lease your equipment. Both buying and leasing tech have their own unique benefits and drawbacks. What is right for you and your company will depend on what you’re looking for. Let’s examine some situations when you may want to consider buying, when you may want to consider leasing and what you need to know to make an informed decision. What You Need to Know About Buying Your Tech When you purchase your technology equipment, it’s yours. You don’t need to worry about making additional payments each month or complying with the rental company’s rules and regulations for making repairs. When you’re done with the tech, you can resell it, repurpose it or even give it away. What you choose to do with the equipment is up to you. Purchasing your equipment also is a deductible expense. You can deduct the full expense of your equipment to save money on taxes. This can make the decision to buy rather than lease much more enticing. Unfortunately, buying does have some downsides. Because you are the owner of the equipment, you’re stuck with it even once it becomes outdated. If you don’t have the funds to purchase a newer version, you may need to deal with older computers, phones or other tech â€" which may hamper your productivity. Buying can also be difficult for new businesses just starting out. When you’re trying to get off the ground, you likely have a lot of other expenses you need to consider. Trying to purchase all new tech can be overwhelming or simply out of the question. What You Need to Know About Leasing Your Tech Leasing can be a better option for some companies and situations, but not all. When you first lease a product, you only need to pay a small fraction of what the tech is worth. This means you can get top-of-the-line technology for a set price each month â€" making you more competitive in your industry. Leasing or renting equipment also provides you with the tech you need for a short period of time. If you do not need a piece of equipment for day-to-day business operations, such as high-tech videoconferencing equipment, leasing can allow you to get what you need for a small chunk of the price. When you enter into a lease agreement, you also know how much money you’ll need to pay each month. Because the monthly payment amount is predetermined during the initial agreement, you won’t be caught off guard with high repair or maintenance payments you didn’t expect. Typically, the price of repairs is worked into your loan terms. However, this also means you’ll end up paying more in the long run. A lease isn’t set up the same way a payment plan is. Traditionally, the total payment you make at the end of your lease period is higher than the actual cost of the equipment â€" and you don’t get to own the product in the end. You make the monthly payments, but you can’t resell the product when you’re done. You’re also required to keep making payments as long as your lease term states. If you only use the equipment for a few months and then decide it isn’t relevant or necessary for your business, you must still make the monthly payment until the term expires. Should You Lease or Buy Your Tech?   There is no clear answer as to whether or not you should lease or buy. However, there are some circumstances when it makes more sense to do one over the other. If the tech is relatively cheap and you can afford to pay for it outright, it’s always a better bet to buy. You should also consider buying equipment if it is crucial for business operations and you don’t believe the investment will quickly become outdated. On the other hand, if you believe you’ll want to replace the equipment every few years, it may be in your best interest to agree to a short-term lease with a renter. Renting or leasing your equipment is also advised if you only need the tech for a very short period of time, such as for a conference or special event. Before you decide whether you should buy or lease your tech, consider your needs and the overall investment. If you believe this piece of equipment will be an essential part of your business success, go ahead and buy. If you see yourself wanting to trade it in for a new model in a year, go with the lease.

How to thrive socially at university if you dont drink - Debut

How to thrive socially at university if you dont drink - Debut This article was written by an external contributor. Chloe Smith is here to help anyone who is worried about making friends at university if they dont drink.   There’s a certain pressure around students and drink its practically expected that if youre at uni, you must enjoy a beer or two to have fun. So if youre not one of them, it could cause you to  shy away from social situations. But heres the tea; you can still have an amazing time on campus without downing a bottle of wine. With the introduction of new events for freshers, the options are practically endless. Heres a few to get you started Do your own thing The most important thing to remember is that you’re perfectly welcome to every single event that your university throws, even if you don’t drink. It might seem difficult if others are  pressuring you, but please try not to let that stop you from socialising and having fun. You can easily go out with your mates and drink soft drinks all night and have just as much fun as those who are drinking alcohol. On the plus side, you’ll remember the events of the night, and you wont wake up in the morning with your head down the toilet! A few bars are also starting a scheme where designated drivers get free drinks so thats a massive financial benefit if you’re able to take that role on. If nowhere local to you is offering it, maybe it’s something you can raise with your students union. That way you can implement it at future events to help non-drinkers feel more welcome on nights out! Go to non-alcohol events Fairly obvious, this one but it still needs to be said. Your university can (and should) offer events where drinking isn’t a prerogative at all. If you don’t feel like going out when others will be drinking, these are perfect. Think film screenings, coffee afternoons, author talks, that kind of thing. Check out your union website to see whats on offer. If nothing comes up, perhaps put in a good word with the staff there its highly likely that you wont be the only student that would benefit from an event such as this. Or better yet, you can volunteer to help start one up. Not only will it help you meet new people, but it will also look great on your CV. Join a society Societies are kind of a holy grail for those of us who go to university and who don’t drink. Not in the sense that they won’t have any events at all where drinking isn’t involved (you are at university, after all) but there will be loads of other options. For example; a society that raises money for charity will focus on things like bucket shakes, fun runs, or even more radical things like adventure challenges. From dance and sport, to debates and media, therell be a group that will work for you. Making friends is just one benefit of joining a society; youll also gain new skills, experience amazing opportunities and boost your employability levels! Hopefully, these tips are helpful for anyone who is joining university as a non-drinker. Dont let others isolate you. There will be something on campus for you to enjoy and have that full student experience. Get out there and explore whats on offer! Download Debut  and  connect with us on  Facebook,  Twitter  and  LinkedIn  for more careers insights.

Whats the missing piece to career fulfillment - Hallie Crawford

Whats the missing piece to career fulfillment I wanted to share with you a story about my career coaching client, Richard. He is an engineer and received a wonderful performance review earlier this year. He also has gotten informal feedback from his boss and peers on a more consistent basis than ever. This wouldn’t be possible if he hadn’t put effort into building his confidence. If you want to see change in any area of your life, you have to take the initiative and do what is best for you. This is especially true if you are seeking career fulfillment. If you are unhappy in your career, it’s important to really put yourself out there and tell people what you want. I credit Richard for all of his hard work. He has truly built up his confidence and has become more assertive throughout his career coaching process. He also has learned the importance of managing up (or managing his boss) more effectively. Nice work Richard! If you found this inspiring or helpful to you, please share your story with us in the comment section below.
